Your Own Homes Improvement Outline
(One for the Ladies)
Allow me to start by saying what a home improvement plan will not do! I have seen this happen more than once, therefore I will say this today. A home improvement project, addition, remodel, or makeover will not compensate for a troubled union. So for those that think home improvement can save a marriage, I am telling you now it will add more stress and it’s a poor substitute for good counseling.
With that said, when you find a house being sold because of a divorce, take a good look at the home since you will see signs of a fantastic remodel job. However, the union still failed. The situation above leads into different areas of a home remodel, acquisition, and selling points. Gentlemen, pay attention here! It is generally understood that women are responsible for 80 percent of all decisions on whether to purchase a specific home.
So what affects the women in their conclusions regarding home purchases and remodeling? By far the two biggest things are the kitchen and the bath. If I had to select one or another, I think I would look at which area had the remodel longer, while at the same time taking a look at the costs of the two alternatives.
As for the guys, what exactly do they need? They would be happy with a large garage/workshop and a secluded den or office to continue with the business or to escape to the privacy of a”cave” Men, as we could see, actually don’t spend too long feathering the nest so as a consequence, we notice that contrary to popular belief, guys really tend to stick to the female’s lead.
Generally speaking, you’ll find that men don’t pay much attention to draperies, window treatments, flower boxes, state of the art appliances, Jacuzzi baths, well-lit bathrooms, large cabinets, or floral designs of any type. They often prefer brown and grey everything, with a large garage, a shed, a sprinkler system, and a privacy fenced back yard for barbeques and lounging privately. Men also like low maintenance houses so that they aren’t constantly being asked to fix or mend things. If left up to the guys to pick, you would find that showers, bathrooms, sinks, baths, flooring, mirrors, cabinetry, appliances, and furnishings would tend to be favored by their industrial power attributes as opposed to beauty.
People are general observations and many times they will not apply. However, by keeping them in mind and using the 80/20 rule, they might assist in the decision-making procedure. So now using what we know, it would be sensible to put your remodel to the bright and light feminine side of life. It appears to make sense that if the women are the decision-makers then we ought to let them decide on what really needs attention!
Let us look at the kitchen first. Would you paint or paint the cabinetry and change the knobs and handles to get the new look? Would new Formica laminate over the countertops with a matching backsplash do just fine? Perhaps a white ceramic sink with a new faucet will attain the desired result. Quite possibly you may choose to tear it all out. If that is true, then paint the walls and consider tiling the floor also. Often, adding some small electrical and lighting upgrades will help to transform and modernize the entire work. Don’t forget the new built-in dishwasher and plumbing too. Custom cabinets, if designed, built, and installed by a local reputable cabinetmaker with references and a picture book of prior work completed, are often very attractive in quality and price. I use craftsmen with low overhead who work on a single job at one time. Often I will ask them to create, in addition to the kitchen, a base cabinet for the bathroom to fit, all for a low price. When working with kitchens I constantly look to find out if a wall can be opened to create a pass-through or pub stool countertop. This lets in more light and allows the individual from the kitchen to talk with and see the folks in the adjoining room. It also creates the effect of a more spacious kitchen.
The most important thing is that a well-lit, mild, bright, and spacious kitchen, well equipped with modern appliances, lots of storage space, and ornamental tiles, paint, and window treatments, will add charm and value to any home’s remodel program.
